The League is a grassroots organization and as such, we focus on the issues that our members care the most about. Each year, our membership is polled to see which issues are most important to them as they will inform our Program for 2024-25.
Voting rights and election reform are always legislative priorities for the League of Women Voters of Florida. We promote electoral reforms that make voting easy, equitable, and effective expressing public will through election results. Oppose gerrymandering, that is, manipulation of election district boundaries to favor one party or class. advocate for fair, transparent redistricting. Are interested in any issue or process that directly affects any Florida citizen’s access to voting (e.g., voter registration, voting machines, ballot design, etc.). Juvenile Justice
The LWVFL supports a juvenile justice system that encourages prevention and diversion special concerns of and their families.
National Popular Vote
The LWVFL believes it is time electors should be guided by the majority of Americans who agree on the person who should lead the nation. Acting in concert with the electoral system, we are working to educate the public and legislators about the benefits of legislation that would instruct our electors to vote for the Presidential candidate who captures the most votes in all 50 states.
Natural Resources
The LWVFL believes in promoting that Florida’s environment is beneficial to the life of every Floridian through the management natural resources in the public interest by the inter relationship air quality, energy, land use, waste management, and waste resources.
Poverty & Affordable Housing
The LWVFL supports legislation that helps meet basic human needs all Floridians. We support programs and policies to prevent or reduce poverty and to promote self-sufficiency for individuals and families. The League believes that through support services, every Floridian can have a quality of life that they deserve.
Reproductive Health & Justice
The LWVFL supports legislation that helps meet basic human needs all Floridians. Clean Energy
The Florida League has two main areas of focus for clean energy: expansion of rooftop solar and adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
Education
The LVWFL supports Florida’s constitutional requirement to make adequate provision for the education of all children that is ‘uniform, efficient, safe, secure and high quality’. We support a free public-school system for Florida with high standards for student achievement and with quality of educational opportunity for all that is financed adequately by the state through an equitable funding formula.
Gun Safety
The LWVFL supports regulations concerning the purchase, ownership, and use of handguns that balance as nearly as possible individual constitutional rights with the general interest and welfare of the community. The League supports licensing procedures for gun ownership by private citizens to include a waiting period for a background check, personal identity verification, gun safety education, and annual license renewal.
Health Care
The LWVFL legislation that health care system that provides access comprehensive quality care all Florida residents. We work to promote a health care system that strives to reduce costs without limiting services quality that also provides access to a basic level of quality care for all citizens. The LWVFL supports measures to implement Florida health care in a manner consistent with the LWVUS position on Health Care reform.
Home Rule/Preemption
The Home Rule/Preemption issue is one of the current focus points of the LWVFL. The League works to advocate for better Florida for all by drafting, supporting, and opposing state legislation. Home Rule is a legal concept that grants local governments the power to govern themselves. In Florida, local governments have broad home rule powers, but the state legislature may preempt this self-government power and preclude local governments from exercising legislative authority in particular areas of law.

The League of Women Voters of Martin County (LWVMC) is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government, working to increase understanding of major policy issues, and advocating for legislative changes and policies for the public good.
